There will be a special screening of "The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" before February's PLUG east side meeting at 17:00 on 2015Feb12.

According to Wikipedia, Aaron Swartz "was an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, writer, political organizer and Internet hacktivist who was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS and the Markdown publishing format, the organization Creative Commons, the website framework web.py and the social news site, Reddit, in which he became a partner after its merger with his company, Infogami. He committed suicide while under federal indictment for data-theft, a prosecution that was characterized by his family as being "the product of a criminal-justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach"".

"The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" is a documentary about the life of Aaron, his technical achievements and his work in social justice and political organization.

The film features interviews with Tim Berners-Lee, Cindy Cohn (EFF), Gabriella Coleman, Cory Doctorow, Peter Eckersley (EFF), Lawrence Lessig, Reprasentative Zoe Lofgren, Tim O'Reilly and other people we should know more about.

Our regular meeting will take place after the movie at 19:00. Our topics will be Elasticsearch and Salt Stack.

This month in addition to our regular meeting we will be showing "The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" starting at 5pm before the regular meeting.

At our regular start time of 7pm we will have 2 presentations this month.

Title: Salt Stack for Configuration Management

Speaker: Kevin Bowling

Abstract: Limelight is using Salt Stack to perform Configuration Management at high scale. This talk will go over why this was the best choice for us, best practices we've discovered along the way, an overview of our workflow, including developer's lifecycle, image management, git integration, and reporting.

Bio: Kevin is a systems developer at Limelight Networks and has experience with a wide range of UNIX implementations.  Current interests include OS build and release engineering for large scale clusters like Limelight's FreeBSD footprint.

Topic: The Contributor's Guide to the Kibana Galaxy

Speaker: Spencer Alger

Exploring the expanses of the Kibana galaxy alone can be daunting, but join us to discover the answer to the greatest question-- how does it all work? We will venture into the belly of the beast to discover what Kibana is, how Kibana works, and how you can modify and extend it.

Spencer Alger is a software engineer at Elasticsearch. He primarily works on Kibana as well as supporting the JavaScript client library at Elasticsearch.

After 5 years of meeting at Iguana Macks, the business has been sold, the name has been changed, and the new owners have proved difficult to work with.  Plus the new private room, which they want us to commit to a $300 minimum order in order to make reservations, has proved to have so much echo that it's actually noisier than just being out in the restaurant, which is also way too noisy.

With all those troubles we have decided to move the Stammtisch to Boulders on Southern which is conveniently located just off the 60 near Fiesta Mall at:

Please come and join us for some good conversation over good food and drinks, both of which are optional... Friends and family are all welcome.

Come see where the conversation leads this time, it doesn't just stick exclusively with Free Software and Linux.  Us geeks are interested in all sorts of things, so the conversation always leads to a good time.

I'm sure the new location will be an improvement over what we have been getting over the last few months.

We'll also have another installment of the Desktop Security Series by der.hans.  His presentation will be on the Lightbeam Firefox addon.

Lightbeam provides interactive visualization for web sites that are tracking you, both sites that you have visited and 3rd party sites.


Time permitting Brian Cluff will do a short presentation on some very useful hidden features in Kdenlive.

After this month, the new location will be open and we will be meeting at Boulders on Southern which is conveniently located just off the 60 near Fiesta Mall.  The new location is already listed in the meetings area of the website.
