This is our main meeting.  This meeting usually takes the form of 1 or usually more presentations.  We try to keep a good balance of novice and advanced subjects so that nobody will be overwhelmed of bored.  Just show up, and we hope you learn something.

Various topics ranging form beginner's to advanced, user to administrator.
When: Second Thursday of each month at 7:00PM
Where: Currently we are only meeting online at https://lufthans.bigbluemeeting.com/plu-yuk-7xx , please check if there is an announcement with an alternative address.  We hope to start meetings in person again soon.

What to expect(For in person meeting):

  • 6:30 - mingling/networking and last minute setup
  • 7:00 - Formal meeting starts with announcements and other PLUG business
  • 7:15 - Presentation(s)
  • 9:00 - Clean up and CAT (Chat About Technology) at a local restaurant. (We sit around and talk about Linux and other geeky stuff over food) We usually meet up at BJ;s in the Chandler fashion center mall located at:

There will be a special screening of "The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" before February's PLUG east side meeting at 17:00 on 2015Feb12.

According to Wikipedia, Aaron Swartz "was an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, writer, political organizer and Internet hacktivist who was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS and the Markdown publishing format, the organization Creative Commons, the website framework web.py and the social news site, Reddit, in which he became a partner after its merger with his company, Infogami. He committed suicide while under federal indictment for data-theft, a prosecution that was characterized by his family as being "the product of a criminal-justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach"".

"The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" is a documentary about the life of Aaron, his technical achievements and his work in social justice and political organization.

Our regular meeting will take place after the movie at 19:00. Our topics will be Elasticsearch and Salt Stack.

This month in addition to our regular meeting we will be showing "The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" starting at 5pm before the regular meeting.

Title: Salt Stack for Configuration Management

Speaker: Kevin Bowling

Abstract: Limelight is using Salt Stack to perform Configuration Management at high scale. This talk will go over why this was the best choice for us, best practices we've discovered along the way, an overview of our workflow, including developer's lifecycle, image management, git integration, and reporting.

Bio: Kevin is a systems developer at Limelight Networks and has experience with a wide range of UNIX implementations.  Current interests include OS build and release engineering for large scale clusters like Limelight's FreeBSD footprint.

Topic: The Contributor's Guide to the Kibana Galaxy

Speaker: Spencer Alger

Exploring the expanses of the Kibana galaxy alone can be daunting, but join us to discover the answer to the greatest question-- how does it all work? We will venture into the belly of the beast to discover what Kibana is, how Kibana works, and how you can modify and extend it.

Spencer Alger is a software engineer at Elasticsearch. He primarily works on Kibana as well as supporting the JavaScript client library at Elasticsearch.

Main topic for this month:

"What's new in fedora 21" By Robyn Bergeron, developer advocate at elasticsearch, former fedora project leader.


We'll also have another installment of the Desktop Security Series by der.hans.  His presentation will be on the Lightbeam Firefox addon.

Lightbeam provides interactive visualization for web sites that are tracking you, both sites that you have visited and 3rd party sites.


Time permitting Brian Cluff will do a short presentation on some very useful hidden features in Kdenlive.

The annual tradition for the Phoenix Linux Users Group for the last 21 years has been to hold an end of the year party In December.   This year will be no exception.

Please join us for food, friends and conversation.

The party is a pot luck, so bring whatever you can. If you can't bring anything, please feel free to come anyway.  The more the merrier.

Please feel free to bring your family and friends to this event.

Dennis Kibbe

Abstract: Privoxy is a non-caching web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for enhancing privacy. It'd available for many Linux distros and is easy to install.

Bio: Herr Professor Kibbe has been teaching the Linux Operating System for over seven years at Mesa Community College and has been working with Linux for over a decade. He is a contributing author to The Command Line by GNU Press and has served as a technical reviewer for other publishers. Two of his courses have received Mesa Community College's Gold Star certification for instructional excellence. Herr Professor Kibbe holds numerous industry certifications.
