Is there anything to look for if an external serial modem
will not work under linux.  I don't think there are
win-external modems are there?  It won't seem to recognize
though.  I have checked setserial it says:

/dev/ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS1 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

trying to connect pppd to either of them just returns nodialtone.
although there is a dialtone through the modem as plugging in
a phone to the output gives a dialtone.

anyideas would be of great help.
