The fact that you were running Xconfigureator was the reason that you didn't
get it up.
X4 is so new that the config utils havent had a chance to catch up yet, so
the Xconfigurator that you were running was your old 3.3.x one.  The only
way to configure X4 is to use the xf86config program and just answer all the
questions it asks.
You can sometimes make a working config file by doing
XFree86 -configure
and that will write the most basic config that you have every seen to the
~root directory.  It will work, but you will have a much better time
configuring the one cranked out by xf86config.

If you are running a voodoo, from what the reviews of X4 are saying, its
significantly slower to upgrade right now.  This seems to be a Voodoo only
thing and that alot of other cards are much faster after the upgrade.  I can
tell you that a matrox millenium I 4 meg and a matrox millenium II 8meg are
much faster.  I also have an nvidia G-Force Erazor X running on X4, but I
have never had it running on the older X versions, so I can't tell you if
there is any speed increase in it.... but its pretty damn fast.
