This all makes sense as I now remember that I put the ip address of the proxy server on our LAN as the only DNS entry. We have a T1 provided by Qwest and I think that I should use the IPs of the DNSservers that Qwest provided. If that solves the problem, then it will also show that there is a reverse DNS lookup for ftp and ssh. Adding the local computers to the hosts file solved the problems on our lan also.
