I run 2.4.2 & 3 on quite a few boxes running Sid, with only minor (expected) problems. As long as you get everything in a working state and only use apt-get after you've tested it on an isolated box first, everything works nicely. Though I have to say, the only reason this was done was for time constraints. It's a hell of a lot easier to apt-get dist-upgrade a box to get the software you need in .debs than it is to custom compile everything for each server. I'm seriously looking at maintaining our own set of packages with our own apt source, I think that's the way to go for ultimate maintainability and ease of administration across multiple servers with different roles. This way you could run a more stable base OS, and only add the packages needed for a servers role. Something like: apt-get install task-custom-web-server apt-get install task-custom-db-server apt-get install task-harden-db-server ... etc. Some other ideas include having reference machines which are essentially "Golden Images" for your apt source. When a package is installed on this server it gets added to the appropriate apt source for it's role. Any level of automation is possible here, though you have to be careful with this sort of thing. There are many other possibilities for this type of administrative automation. The concept of having a reference server which is replicatable, especially on install is very attractive in an environment where you may have to build new servers constantly, or re-build servers for different roles, etc. It's even very attractive for a workstation reference, where you can be sure that everyone is working in a common evironment (at least to begin with.) Anyway, I'd like to make this a real project, maybe others would be interested in contributing. Is this correct? I have no problems installing the kernel, but iptables seems to rely upon a newer version of libc6. Am I correct in understanding the easiest way is to just do a update from the unstable archives? If so, as anyone ran into any probs in doing so? v/r Mike ________________________________________________ See http://PLUG.phoenix.az.us/navigator-mail.shtml if your mail doesn't post to the list quickly and you use Netscape to write mail.
