Well, I just wanted to see if I could eliminate a few steps.  I am running
gnome on Mandrake 8, so I just did step 5 was all (actually, I just did 
the export part on the command line) and then ran
konqueror and Bam!!! Beautiful anti-aliased fonts!!
I now have a very BIG reason to run konqueror
