Why does top report "bad data in /var/run/utmp" so often under RH 6.2?

I never had this problem with Slackware 3.1 (heavily modified no less)

The currently "solution" is a:
sudo cp /dev/null /var/run/utmp

which isnt exactly the most elegant thing in the world, and isnt
solving the actual problem either...
