I got a Ram Air Trans Am in April. One of the 'features' of this car is
that in the event of an airbag firing, the previous 5 seconds worth of
data recording engine RPM, ABS action, transmission gear, etc. is
stored.

You know it cost GM something to put this in, so it's probably there to
protect them in court later. At least they thought it was in THEIR best
interests to do so ...
