Sounds like your DNS is not set up right. Is this a completely new install? If so check /etc/resolv.conf to see which servers it is trying to use to look up with. Are you using dial-up service? I use kppp to dial up and it allows setting DNS servers within kppp. Check with your ISP to see which name servers they use.
