Please bear with me, I am not a IT=20
Professional. I have just purchased Mandrake 8.0 and have =
installed on a=20
new clean drive. I am running a AMD processor and had 256meg of =
RAM. The=20
installation went smoothly with no problems using the expert =
mode. The=20
problems began when i rebooted the first time. X-windows started but I =
am not=20
sure that it started correctly. The screen flashed a few times, came =
up with a=20
grey dotted screen, then a blue screen, with an arrow pointer. Then i =
keep=20
getting error messages susch as: application "keyboard-properties" =
(process=20
1899) has crashed due to a fatal error. (Segmentation =
Fault)
What is a segmentation fault? Each =
time I startx=20
the results are different. This last time I had no error messages, =
when Gnome=20
started. When starting KDE desktop I get nothing but error =
messages saying that certain parts of the application have crashed and =
have=20
sent out a
signal 11. I have been reading =
and reading=20
all the books and internet sites on Linux--so much information i don't =
know=20
where to start to put it all together.
I know that i =
installed the=20
packages that i wanted during the install, such as game station and=20
staroffice52, but how do I go about getting them to run--I can't even =
find=20
them. what am i doing wrong. probly something simple. but I =
don't=20
know where to start. please help if possible so I don't have to =
make=20
Linux shelfware and put in Windows. Does anyone know where the =
Gnome=20
application crash page can be found? I would like to see how a =
properly=20
configured Linux machine works. frustrated but not giving=20
up!!
