I started my thesis on MSOffice.  When it grew to 40+ pages, MSOFfice
started blue screening.  I switched to StarOffice, and the crashed
dropped by about 90%.

I was using Win95 with Office 97, then Win95 with StarOffice 5.1.  I had
to use Windows as the Statistics software I was using ran only under
Windows, and vmware was just hitting the scene.
