It might be the configuration files, for whatever reason, have been 
corrupted.  You could try "mv .kde kde.bak" to move all of the configuraton 
files out the way and let us know if that works.  If it was the config 
files, then you might have to start from scratch (usually easy), or hunt 
down the problem file (generally difficult).
