Thanks for all your help.   I ran the Xconfigurator and all went well.   I am having difficulty with changing the resolution though.  I tried the example you gave me below in KDE, but to know avail.  Will this work from the KDE desktop ?   I'm confused.

If you already have multiple resolutions set up through Xconfigurator, you
can Ctrl-Alt + (plus) or Ctrl-Alt -(minus) while in X to increase/decrease
the
resolution.
