I have had this same problem for years, but I have never found the 
cause of it.  It seems to have something to do with switching the mouse 
driver while the X server is running.  Your best bet is to keep the 
default, and then go in after the install (with a text editor) and 
change "Protocol" from "PS/2" to "IMPS/2", as suggested earlier.  Note 
that this happens with at least the Microsoft Intellimouse and the 
Logitech Wheel Mouse (both of which use the same protocols) using 
either the USB or PS2 interface.

If, however, you accidentally select this option in the future STOP 
MOVING THE MOUSE!  As you found out, continued use of the mouse 
eventually results in the system freezing, which is most certainly not 
the desired behavior.  Instead you can use Tab and Space Bar (or enter) 
keys to go the cancel / back option and restore the original mouse 
protocol.

Good to hear that it all worked out in the end, though.
