The DVD/ROM drive is brand new.  I replaced my Creative Labs DVD drive
which steadfastly refused to work either in windoze or Linux(Appr.cost, when
new, $150.00) with an El Cheapo ($39.95) generic drive which works like a
champ.  I don't think it's that. I guess I'll take the covers off again 
and check  the audio cables for continuity.
