What happens when you run a command like this:

mount -t smbfs -o username=name_of_windows_user
//name_of_xp_box/name_of_share /mount/point

Or this:

smbclient -L name_of_xp_box -U name_of_windows_user

Do these commands give you some sort of error, or do they just fail
silently?
