Red Hat Enterprise (2.1) 'End of Life' products It does make sense at least on some issues...that they don't want to tie up their resources patching / updating / backporting and then testing products. More to the point was their change to their Red Hat Network account (up2date) - this was a tremendous feature that they added, updating the installed packages with a single command line (up2date -u). They started out by giving it to everyone who registered and then they made it a $60 per year per computer deal. There is a fairly well defined 'apt-get' / 'yum' setup now for updating Red Hat and it may very well be that the updates might be gotten from sources other than Red Hat. For example, see Craig
