I would suggest upgrading your kernel.  The 2.4.8 kernel is roughly 2 years
old, and I believe many things related to USB were fixed between that
version and the current version (2.4.21).

A quick Google search leads me to believe that these messages are related to
bugs in the USB code, and that these bugs were fixed sometime after 2.4.8.
My USB camera (Sony DSC-S75) works fine when I mount it (using /dev/sda1),
and I'm using RedHat 8.0 (kernel version 2.4.18 or so).  I seem to recall
having some trouble getting my camera to work when I was using RedHat
7.something and an older version of the kernel.  After upgrading to RedHat
8.0, I got my camera working in no time.
