=46rom what I've read and from experience with earlier 2.4 kernels, you do
indeed need to compile the kernel without its built-in PCMCIA support.
Otherwise, it will conflict.  The pcmcia-source package contains the
source of the modules from the pcmcia-cs project, which (to my
knowledge) have support for cards which the stock kernel still does not
and which are considered by many to be better quality.

As an example: at a previous job, I had a 3Com NIC (I forget which one,
but it might've used the 3c905 driver; that sounds right) which I could
not get working with the kernel drivers (support just didn't exist).
Granted, this was around the time of the VM fiasco, so the kernel's own
support might have improved.
