Mine does as well. It's not the same as the sound mixer, though. I can turn
the sound mixer all the way up, then go to 11 or 12 via the hardware
control :).

It seems the sound is also amplified if I rest my wrists on the keyboard.
Just noticed that as I was leaving work today. I'll have to investigate
sometime.
