I'm not in a position to look > at the moment. > > Someone familiar with Debian/Knoppix should pipe up here just to make > sure that everything you do is harmless. --- my memory tells me that after you make config [make menuconfig|make xconfig] that you should then edit the Makefile and put something in the line EXTRAVERSIONS = - like a 1 or 2 or something and that is what keeps you from stupidly clobbering existing modules and vmlinuz/vmlinux files if you have already installed the same kernel via binary method.
