I worked at Intel for a few years and I can tell you that Intel
does not like pushed around by Microsoft just like everyone else.
There are times that my group would have to head down a certain
direction simply b/c that was what kept M$ the happiest. Linux
allows the HW vendors (if they play nicely) to be in much more 
control of the direction they head in and provide input directly
to the OS developers to best support their HW. Add the fact that 
Linux has gained such market penetration, and it makes a lot of 
sense to me.
