Well startx should be bypassing xdm so shouldn't be an issue.  Unless this
failure is stopping something else from installing.

Next stop would be to check the Errorlog for X.  Should be one in
/var/log/.  Also look at .xsession-errors in the home directory of
whatever user you are trying startx.  Give us feedback from those logs.
