I don't know of a completely magical memory display tool, but I have used si (System Information Viewer) to get some information about remote machines out. Once I know the chipset and Processor, figuring out the memory type is potentially possible. As a complete worst case, I have bought 2 sets of memory upgrades and just used the one that fits. I know some kernels are compiled with a 1GB RAM limit. Almost all are compiled with a 4GB limit, barring Redhat ES.
