# cd /usr/src/linux && make menuconfig
->Character Devices
-->Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 DRI support)

So, this works with 2.6 kernels.  Maybe I'll experiment with that for
this Thinkpad T40.  Thanks for the tip.
