This happens when working with any kind of large file,
in any way, not just copying,
Even saving a big image (20+ MB etc.) in Gimp causes X, the mouse, and
even gkrellm to lock completely until the entire file is flushed from ram,

If it's a big file, larger than 512 megs, the box is okay until flush time,
then freezes until it's finished 'flushing' that batch to disk and so on...

Darn 2.4 kernel!
