In the mid 1980's IBM was working with mainframe disk drives in a lab 
situation.  They were able to reliable read the last 22 writes (over the 
same spot) and recover some data down to 26.  So you might want to do at 
least that many formats.

As for acid.  That would work.  There is always a little tag over a screw 
head that says "Opening will void your Warenty".  That's where you start 
to get to the disk.  However, there are demagnitizers that will do the 
same thing.  Sandpaper, too.
