IPsec is now built into the 2.6+ kernels (well the most recent ones at least) and with the ipsec-tools installed you can probably connect to most other ipsec implementations. http://www.ipsec-howto.org/x277.html Most VPNs are an implementation of ipsec. FreeSWAN/OpenSWAN included ... most of the commercial ones for windows ... so there is usually a high degree of interoperability ... or at least a low degree of operability beceause there are differences in features.
