I've been reading a lot of positive things about Kanotix. Has anybody on this list tried it? It's based on Knoppix, but uses straight Debian Sid packages. You upgrade from Sid, not from a mix of repositories that tends to break things. Basically, once it's installed it's pure Debian Sid. The ability to upgrade without breaking things is a big issue, and this one has that problem solved. I also came across a review at OSNews.com of 18 live-cd's. The reviewer discussed their upgradeability, as well as their install-ability to the HDD. Here's the link: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9569&page=1 The winners in the reviewer's mind for systems with over 256 megs were PCLOS, Ubuntu and Mepis. Ubuntu also ran on 128 megs Here's what the reviewer said about PCLOS: ------------------------------------------------ "PCLinuxOS (www.pclinuxonline.com) is an offshoot of Mandrake. The work of Texstar and friends, PCLOS is a Live CD that has it all: polish, configuration tools, a KDE desktop that seems designed for someone who wants to work, not just show off the software. The best part is that it's all preconfigured: it has the most complete list of browser plugins I've seen. Although rpm based, it uses apt-get/Synaptic for software management. The community is smart and helpful. The repositories are surprisingly rich. You get even more current software than Mandrake. The difference is, PCLOS is more tightly integrated, and in my experience, more stable. PCLOS is what I run on my home machine -- after the Live CD assured me that everything worked. (And then I installed Gnome, which works beautifully.)" ------------------------------------------------- It seems to me that for faster machines, PCLOS has a lot of qualities we're looking for: Stability Useability Configuration tools for the user once they get it home Upgradeability Free software- you don't have to pay for packages or upgrades Good online community support Would anybody with some spare HDD room be willing to test drive Kanotix and PCLOS, with a view towards their usefulness for the InstallFest? I keep suggesting PCLOS, but even though it's quite popular, I seem to be the only person on this list who's heard of it.
