Hey, I 'just happened' to have a second user already
there that I normally don't use, and somehow
remembered the passwd for it. Yes, I am in it now and
'everything' is back like it should be and it opens up
the partitions without the Gimp raising up its head!! 

Now IF I can follow...remember I am one who doesn't do
much except $ cd /sss/yyy/zzz and rm -f file(s) using
cli, so it can be dangerous for me to tread without
keystroke by keystroke examples.

So, I will just use this alternate userid for
awhile...till I can get to an installfest or get
someone who can either haul me and mine or bring a
monitor to  the meeting at the Muse coffeehouse
meetings.

Duh here, never thought of seeing where that problem
was!!

I usually 'tread lightly' on the 'dark side' er, cli.
