I decided that I wanted them in another directory so I pulled the directory 
over there and clicked 'move'. I start my computer up the next day and the 
directory has moved  but where the pics are is now a new directory called 
'.xvpics'. 

Is there a way to get my pics back?

I run debian installed from Mepis.
