I have a UMAX Astra 1220S scanner which works very well with both Linux and the dark side. I got it at Fry's a few years ago for under $50 (Probably unsellable remainders from somewhere else.) and to be fair, the supplied scsi card didn't work and I had to purchase a generic scsi card for almost as much as the scanner cost. However, I still have it and it's still chugging along doing great work.
