It sounds like the partition may be getting remounted read-only, perhaps
because of a disk error. I've seen this happen twice on two different boxes
with failing hard drives.

# mount

and look to make sure the line for /dev/hde6 is mounted read/write '(rw)'.

Look through your log files. Search for lines that mention 'hde6'.
