My experience with SuSe 9.3 Pro is the system does not detect hardware changes at boot. At least not like the "other OS". The GUI utility I use to fiddle with video stuff is called SaX2. You must be root to run it, but resolution, hardware changes etc. are all done there. It's pretty straightforward.
