Ditto... I use samba for developer shares all of the time.
And they all use Windows XP.
(sick as it may be)
I've had roaming profiles setup at home, but I that was purely
entertainment value.

Personally when it comes to transferring between machines, I use
either scp (pscp for windows), or SMB (samba).  Granted, this is only
when I'm using my Windows laptop.
