Thanks, Josh ... The laptop on which I want to install Linux is an hp pavilion model #zv6201cl from Costco. Of course, it is returnable if it doesn't turn out to be satisfactory with Linux ;)) If anyone knows of a better deal -- i.e. a cheaper laptop with near comparable features ... especially one that does not require paying the M$ tax, I'd be interested. This one has an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200+ 2.0 GHz 512 KB -- L2 Cache 60 GB hard drive 15.4" WXGA display ATI Radeon Xpres 200 M with 128 dedicated video memory 54g 802.11 b/g WLAN (don't know that I have any interest in that) DVD+RW and CD-RW combo drive with double layer support 8 Cell Lithium-Ion battery 6 in 1 digital media reader My objective is to have Linux as my main operating system with Win4Lin so I can run win98 as a task under Linux for the few win apps that I still use until I can get up to speed on Linux alternatives -- mainly Pagemaker and Paint Shop Pro. Since it came with Win XP (which I do not really want), I'll probably set it up as a dual (or multiple) boot rather than just reformatting to eliminate XP entirely. I have install CDs for Mandrake 10.1 official (though I know there is a later version called Mandriva) and a Mepis Live CD (b2004.05). I've been kind of partial to Mandrake just because my old 8.1 version has been running for 4+ years without ever crashing and I have never done or needed to do an update. I like stable and do not want to have to bother with endless updating. I'm also interested in Ubuntu because of all the high-praise I've heard from many users, but I don't know much about it. I just do not want something that I'll have to endlessly update or continuously tinker with. So, I'm open to suggestions and recommendations.
