-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 What: PLUG Developer Meeting When: Thursday, February 1st, 2006 at 7:00 PM Where: Adtron Corporation 4415 E. Cotton Center Blvd., Suite 100 Phoenix, AZ 85040 (Directions are available in the web site FAQ: http://plug.phoenix.az.us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=31) Topic: A Ruby on Rails Project Demonstration by Craig White Ruby[1] is becoming a popular programming language for web development. The Ruby on Rails[2] project provides a system for rapid development of web applications, allowing the creation of database centered applications very quickly. This project demonstration concerns implementation of ruby on rails system that is in production at a non-profit mental health services provider in the valley. Software has been developed exclusively using Quanta Plus, runs on CentOS 4.4, Apache Web server, PostgreSQL, SVN and Trac. User authentication is handled by network LDAP, modules include clients, case managers, facilities, placements, referral notes, personnel (this module is very robust and mostly complete), and a time clock. Some amount of ajax is used and while ruby on rails supports larger implementations of ajax, I have been hesitant to overload because client systems are frequently Macintosh OS 9, using Netscape 7.02 (the last version released for OS 9) and only moderate support for Web 2.0 features. Presenter Bio: Craig White is a former vice president of Arizona Apple User group (mid 80's), and have been doing computer support, contract sysadmin for Macintosh, Windows, Linux networks since 1987 (though my Linux experiences started approx 1999). I am a member of the Samba team (albeit a minor role) as I maintain wiki.samba.org Network Note: The wireless Internet at Adtron is known to mostly work but is flaky. We have a donated 8 port switch for wired connections but it can fill up if many people want to connect. If you have an access point or a switch to share for the duration of the meeting, it is much appreciated.
