So ... Ubuntu 7.04 has now been out a couple of weeks. 
Do any of you who like to play around with and compare
distros have any opinions about it?

Personally, I like it a lot. I've never even seen a
previous version, so don't have anything to compare
with. But I've also caught one negative review. The
problems the reviewer cited were things I don't care
about, so I'm not deterred.

Ubuntu 7.04 is simple and clean looking. Not a bunch of
frills, though I know users can glitz it up until they
hang foxtails off the menu if they want to. (Which is
good, because enablement is what it's all about.)

All I need to be happy on a Unix-like system is a good
editor (XEmacs preferred), a good terminal window
program, preferably one that supports tabs, a good
browser (Firefox preferred), Perl, and a C compiler,
and I'm happy as a clam. The rest is frills, most of
which I can get off my Mac.

DTM-wise my preference is for an iconless Desktop
(unless I put one there myself), with a basic but
customizable and unobtrusive menu system and task bar,
and by all means virtual windows.

So far I've been running Ubuntu only under VMware. I
have to rebuild my primary PC soon, including a new OS,
but before I do that I have to make sure I can get back
to operational without any unpleasant surprises. For me
time spent building systems is unemployment time.

To those of you who responded last week to my questions
about why I can't get my virtual machines back on the
net following a hard crash -- I still can't get them
up, and have no idea why. Neither does a friend who
works for VMware. Even tried installing a new VM.

But that's a saga for a different thread.
