I have used mpd extensively on my home network and, with a variety of
clients to choose from, it has performed just fine. It has clients
ranging from the PHP-driven to the GNOME wizz-bang (and yes, CLI too).
You can even run more than one client simultaneously if you like
controlling a GUI app from the CL.
