Thanks ET ...

So, I tried this:

firefox test.htm >/dev/null 2>&1 &

And that seemed to mask the problem,
although I still wonder if there might
be some way to further address the problem.

Also, I wonder if there is a way to make
a script named 'ff' so I could just do:

ff test.htm

to get that same /dev/null result?
