moin moin, Murph will cover tmux for us and Arun will cover OpenWRT. The meeting is online in a BigBlueButton instance starting at 19:00 AZ time ( UTC -7 ) https://lufthans.bigbluemeeting.com/plu-yuk-7xx https://gettogether.community/events/71316/east-valley-meeting/ After the meeting we will be discussing a return to in person meetings for PLUG presentations. Show up if you'd like to participate. Talk descriptions and speaker bios: * tmux tmux is a terminal multiplexer, a tool that makes working on the command line better and easier. It can allow you to work across connections, and to get multiple views/shells on the computers that you are using. Murph will show how it works, how to install it on popular systems, and how to use it. * OpenWRT Most "router" devices have firmware updates for 2-3 years. Beyond that, the user has two choices (a) continue using the device without any security updates, or (b) buy a new device. Besides, the typical feature set in consumer-grade devices is limited. In this presentation, we will go over how OpenWrt can help you resurrect older WiFi APs and Gateway devices and more ... 1. Rejuvenating EOL router devices with OpenWrt. 2. Typical use cases for a Router / Gateway / WiFi APs. 3. Deployment options - As a dedicated device, VM, or a Container. 4. Official OpenWrt images - selection, installation, and post-installation due diligence. 5. Extending the base functionality with a whole lot more, with OpenWrt packages. 6. DIY or Commercial products (based on OpenWrt). 7. Resources for help. 8. Q&A * Murph Murph has spoken several times for PLUG ( screen, the Fediverse ) and speaks at conferences on both coasts and the middle of the US Some conferences include: SCaLE, SeaGL, Penguin Con, Ohio Linux Fest and HOPE. * Arun Arun Khan has been using *nix-like OS (at a professional level) since 1983 at Bell Labs and with Linux since c. 1995 when he started his IT consulting practice providing solutions, services, and training to small businesses (mostly Open Source based). He has been a Linuxer since the early days (Slackware, Debian, RedHat Linux, Mandrake, Caldera, S.u.S.E, ..., etc.), when crafting X.org files the correct HSync, and VSync parameters for monitors for X Windows used to be the norm. He hung out with the Linux admins at the Fermi Labs DC (IL) and learned a lot about Linux admin from the gurus. He has evangelized Linux in several forums since the mid-1990s (talks at conferences, helping users at installfests, mailing list forums, etc.). He was the Linux SIG chair at the Chicago Computer Society. He was lucky enough to have met (in person) a few of the OpenSource stalwarts like Linus Torvalds, Eric Raymond, Mark Shuttleworth, Bob Young, and Mark Ewing. Today, one of his interests is open-source solutions in small devices for the SOHO domain. He will be talking about leveraging OpenWrt for the SOHO. ciao, der.hans -- # https://www.SpiralArray.com https://www.PhxLinux.org # "It's your difference that gives you the power that you have." # --Helen Mirren --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list: PLUG-discuss@lists.phxlinux.org To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: https://lists.phxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
