Western Digital is the only brand I know of that distinguishes between master-with-slave-present and master-without-slave-present. No way I'm aware of to get around it, sorry. You could put your CD-ROM on your primary IDE channel with the hard drive and use your removable drives on the secondary channel, but that would degrade the primary master hard drive performance (at least somewhat, if not a lot). You could get an add-in card to use the removable drives and/or the CD-ROM drive; that would probably cost about $30-40.
