I could be mistaken, but it sounds like maybe it could also be done by
upgrading to XFree86 4.4 (although that will get tricky in most
distributions) or X.Org 6.7 (it's binary-compatible with XF86 4.4 and is
a fork from the last release candidate before the license change).  (On
Gentoo, the package is xorg-x11.  I documented how I migrated in a
recent email to plug-discuss, if you're interested.)  Purely out of
curiosity, did you try this?
