Steve Gibson (whatever you think about him) does a fairly decent job
explaining this.  On his page at <http://grc.com/dos/winxp.htm>, there
are a couple sections starting with "What are 'Sockets'?  And why are
some of them 'Raw'?" that have useful information, if you ignore the
alamist tone and sensationalism.
