Not that this would have helped in your situation, but I understand that 2006 RC2 has a vastly improved upgrade process from previous versions. In the past, I have been so paranoid of their upgrade process that (after the first failed attempt) I never do an upgrade, instead opting for a full reinstall. This is fairly simple with Linux if your organized (I have had to force myself to be).
