The
release of Xara as FOSS is good news, indeed. Many viewed Xara as
the "CorelDraw killer" when Xara Studio came out in 1994. Corel
was so worried that they immediately snapped up the worldwide
distribution rights. Xara never did much in Corel's hands, CEO
Michael Cowpland being constantly on the lookout for the next big
thing. In 1999 Corel released the right back to the original
software company in the UK.
