hmm, I understand your concern, In cases where I have had odd(newer) resolutions required I have just looked up the LCD MFR Specs and added specific modeline entries in my xorg config. That doesn't always work either though. Last I heard for the newer resolutions, the xorg autodetect picked them up and and set them up correctly with the newer chipsets.

IIRC there are a few small forums that specifically deal with Linux/xorg/xfree86 on Dell Laptops. In fact, I think Dell now ships/supports a brand of Linux on selected Laptops.

Yep, the issues were getting the native resolutions on the new short screens which are 1280x800 or 1450x900 (?) or 1680x1050.  IOW, I got 6.10 working at 1024x768 on an LCD that was one of those.  It was usable but distorted since it was not the "old style" 4:3 aspect ratio.  I think I could get the native resolution now on the Intel Drivers but the X1400 might offer other benefits for some games under Windows (not a great gaming system, but maybe more serviceable than the Intel video).  But I sure would not want the questionable benefit of being able to play eq2 on a laptop if it meant not getting native resolutions while in Linux.  Hence the concern about the X1400 with Ubuntu.

Anyway, thanks for your replies.

Well, on the FireGL, I get full resolution of 1600x1200. On the Toshiba, the LCD only supports 1280x1024, but if I connect it to my Samsung 204t LCD it will do the 1600x1200 without

I've needed to replace my failing laptop for months and have gone so far as to purchase and return/exchange 3 of them.  They all used the newest Intel on-board video but the recommended drivers for ubuntu 6.10 did not function properly so in each case I had to fully restore Windows and take the machine back.  Well, maybe "had to" is strong since I did have each machine working, just not at the native wide screen (short screen in my opinion) LCD resolution.

Anyway, I am looking at a Dell Inspiron E1505 which can be configured with a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Hypermemory video card.  I was hoping to find someone who had that card working properly (resolution specifically) with Ubuntu.  I could get it without but that is back to the Intel video (although I hear the drivers do work now).

So really no specific question, more an appeal for info from folks who have used the X1400

I have an IBM t40p with a Mobility FireGL, and a Toshiba with the Mobility Radeon x300 both of which have 6.10 running on them.

The default install worked correctly for me. What questions did you have?

Anyone have any experience running Linux on a laptop with this video?  Specifically Ubuntu 6.10 but will happily take any input.
