Thanks. I actually rebooted the machine after apt-get upgrade and that is when the problem occurred. I then shutdown the machine and started it up again and the problem persisted. 
 
I looked in /var/log for a gnome log, but I don't see anything. Dmesg doesn't show any errors that I can see. Where does gnome write error messages?

if one of the core libraries for gnome has changed, you might need to
log out and log back in again.
