I'd like to see this on the East side if possible.  The Topic would be something like "Common User Configuring the Firewall".  My preference would be Ubuntu Orientation if it makes any difference.  I would hope this could use some GUI tool and be aimed at telling a common user when to want/need an active firewall and when it should not be required and how to configure it in terms they would understand.  I know I find many of the online guides less than ideal.

BTW, the following is a reply I sent to an installfest user we installed last December who asked me if PLUG might do such a presentation he could attend:

That is something I would like to see as well because there are so many different ways to do it and many require a deep understanding of networking to do well.  What I would like to see is a presentation of how a lay user can configure a/the firewall for use on a public network as well as on any machine connected directly to an ISP (not behind another firewall).  I will suggest such a talk (as you could if you made the suggestion on the PLUG Discuss mail list.

Actually ubuntu does have a firewall (ufw) installed by default that is not turned on by default.  You can turn if on and off from a terminal with "sudo ufw enable|disable".  Configuring it is another story and there are many ways to do that.  By default it allows the user of the machine to do almost anything and does not permit anything outside the machine to come in except in response to something user initiated.  That is probably a gross oversimplification.  Here are a few links you might find useful if the quantity is not enough to confuse the issue:
